Gabrielle's Porch

Atlanta, Georgia Season 1, Episode 1 — Searching for the Porch

She wasn't starting from nothing. She was starting from almost.

The house was already hers. The teal door. The board and batten. The wreath she hung because she wanted it to feel like home. Gabrielle was doing everything right — except there was nowhere to sit outside. No place to land. No porch.

Just a door. Some steps. And a feeling that something was missing.

That feeling had a name. She just hadn't found it yet.

The Story Behind the Design

Gabrielle came to her Pour with two grandmothers in her memory. One porch that was loud and full and always open. Another that was quiet, still, and intentional.

Two completely different women.

Two completely different ways of being outside.

Both of them living inside her.

She had spent years preserving other people's memories. What she hadn't done yet was build a space that held her own.

We sat outside together. She talked. I listened. And when I turned the board around — she almost cried.

"I didn't know what to expect, but you listened to everything I said and put it in a design."

The Before

A house with good bones and nowhere to rest. No porch. No place to gather. No threshold between her world and the street.

The Build

Built from scratch. A full deck where there was nothing. Warm natural wood. White painted skirting. A railing that frames the space without closing it off. Seating that says stay a while. Planters that say somebody tends to this.

The same house. A completely different life being lived in front of it.

The After

What Gabrielle has now is what every porch should be — a reason to come outside.

A place that holds memory. A space that announces who she is before she even opens the door.

Her full story is coming to Searching for the Porch — Season 1, Episode 1.
